Sudbury students arrive home after visit to Japan cut short by quake

Tears flowed at the Sudbury, Ont., airport late Monday as a group of students and teachers arrived home from Japan.

The 10 students, two teachers and eight parents were in Tokyo on Friday when the 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan.

Teacher Gisele Beaudry of Lockerby Composite School says a decision was made to move the group south to an unaffected area, near Mount Fuji.

From there, the group took the next available flight home to Canada.

Beaudry says the educational trip became more about learning life lessons than it did about soaking up culture.

She says once the students and teachers get settled in, they’ll discuss ways the school can help the people of Japan.

In an ironic twist, the group was supposed to visit Egypt, but when turmoil erupted there, the destination was changed to Japan.
