Brazilian authorities confirm at least 12 people are dead after a gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Rio de Janeiro Thursday.
It happened at Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira around 8:30 a.m. local time, when about 400 people were in the building.
Officials said the attacker – identified by local media as 23-year-old former student Wellington Menezes de Oliveira – fired at least 30 rounds, killing 10 girls and one boy.
After being shot in the leg by police, de Oliveira turned the gun on himself.
Rio state Health Secretary Sergio Cortes said about 18 other people were wounded in the shooting, at least four of those in grave condition.
