Japan’s nuclear agency confirms crisis alert level now at 7

Japan’s nuclear agency confirmed the crisis alert level was raised to 7 on Tuesday, indicating a level of radiation equal to Chernobyl.

It’s the country’s highest such warning since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in the north part of the country was heavily damaged in that disaster and now officials fear radiation is at the same level as the 1986 disaster in the former Soviet Union.

A 7.0-magnitude aftershock hit Japan Monday, triggering a tsunami alert on the one-month anniversary of the twin natural disasters that claimed 25,000 lives.
