Higher than normal levels of radiation detected in Ontario

Radiation levels in Ontario have risen since the nuclear plant crisis in Japan.

Ontario’s energy minister Brad Duguid admitted Monday that higher levels have been detected, but called the increases “miniscule” and said public health was not in jeopardy.

Duguid didn’t confirm if the levels were detected in water, air or food, but maintained there was nothing to worry about.

“If there was ever a problem here in Ontario, Ontario families would be the first to know,” he assured.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Heath, Dr. Arlene King, issued a statement Monday, saying:  “Based on current information, I am of the view that there is no health risk for Ontarians from the damaged nuclear facility in Japan.”

“Canada and Ontario have strong systems in place to protect the safety of our food supply.”

Officials in Japan have now increased the nuclear risk rating at the Fukushima Daiichi plant from 5 to 7 – the highest level.
