New house prices rise in February: StatsCan

Statistics Canada says its new housing price index rose 0.4 per cent in February, following a 0.2 per cent increase in January.

The agency says Toronto and Oshawa as well as Edmonton were the top contributors to the February climb.

The highest month-to-month increase, 1.8 per cent, was recorded in Regina.

Prices fell 0.4 per cent in Calgary and were also down in Windsor, Ottawa, Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton.

In Calgary, builders were offering promotional prices and upgrade packages in order to stimulate sales.

On a year-over-year basis, the index was 2.1 per cent higher in February.
