Woody Harrelson’s ‘Bullet for Adolf’ opens in Toronto next week

Before Woody Harrelson joined the cast of “Cheers” and went on to earn Academy Award nominations he was working construction in Houston and a play inspired by his early days opens next week in Toronto.

Harrelson stopped by Breakfast Television Tuesday to promote “Bullet for Adolf” that will run at the University of Toronto’s historic Hart House theatre. The provocative and funny play is a semi-autobiographical work inspired by the actor’s experience on a Texas construction site in 1983.

“I do think there’s a lot in the play to talk about but honestly, the play is not written to try to make you philosophize it’s really written to make you laugh,” he said.

“So if you’re not laughing, I’ll be crying.”

Harrelson wrote the play, which touches on issues of race, gender and sexuality, with his long-time friend Frankie Hyman. The two lost touch for several years and Harrelson went to great lengths to track down his friend. When a private detective was unable to find Hyman, Harrelson made an appeal during an appearance on Jay Leno

Harrelson co-wrote and is directing the show, which starts previews April 19 and officially opens April 21. A fellow theatre colleague insisted he open his play in Toronto and Harrelson said he’s enjoying his time here.

“I love the people, I love the places,” he said, noting he likes the local Yoga studios and restaurants.

He’s also giving seminars at the Drake hotel Wednesday night.

Actor Brandan Coffey said his experience on this play is unlike any other he’s had so far in the theatre.

“The great thing about working with Woody is he really lets each individual shine with their own talents and he’s really given us an open door to improv and flesh out our characters in a way which I’ve never seen before in any theatre production I’ve been a part of,” he said.
