Man charged for allegedly scamming senior out of life savings

Police arrested a man this week for allegedly posing as a contractor and defrauding an 89-year-old man out of his life savings. Investigators believe there may be more victims.

Authorities claim the 44-year-old suspect met his alleged victim in 2009 when he posed as a roofing and eavestrough repair man in the Victoria Park and Kingston Road area.

The suspect befriended the elderly man after he was hired to do some repairs on his eavestroughs. Police say he told the man he was a successful contractor involved in a profitable project and asked for loans with the promise of returns, which were allegedly never delivered.

Authorities claim the alleged fake contractor scammed the elderly man out of his life savings — $66,450 — between December 2009 and March 2011.

Kelly Marges was arrested Saturday and is charged with fraud over $5,000 and 37 counts of fraud under $5,000.

Anyone with information should call police at (416) 808-4104 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.

Earlier this month, a 27-year-old man was charged with fraud after he allegedly scammed 95-year-old Marion Dressler out of $7,500 when he posed as a furnace repair man.
