Woman charged after dozens of cats seized from midtown home

A 63-year-old woman was charged after the OSPCA seized dozens of cats from a home in North Toronto.

Police say a federal election pollster called them around 2:30 p.m. Sunday after canvassing a property on Manor Road, near Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton Avenue, and noticing a foul odour.

When officers arrived, they found the smell was coming from the feces and urine of some 50 or 60 cats roaming the house.

“If you took about 50 litter boxes and put them in the microwave, then you’d know what our summers were like,” the next-door-neighbour said.

“At the same time, let’s remember there is a human being there who may not be capable of making rational decisions. My feeling was the city should have got involved.”

The homeowner willingly handed over the animals to the OSPCA on Monday, and they are being treating for respiratory and other health problems.

“The home was not a proper living environment for the animals,” said the OSPCA’s Alison Cross. “They were roaming free which can cause concern with the cleanliness of the environment.”

Diane Way, 63, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Cruelty to Animals,
2) Cause or permit unnecessary suffering to animals.

She will appear in court in June.
