Bail hearing postponed for man accused of murdering York U student

The man accused of murdering York University student Qian Liu has had his bail hearing pushed to the end of next month.

Brian Dickson appeared in court Tuesday morning via video link from the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, but was remanded into custody until May 24.

He was charged with first-degree murder after 23-year-old Qian Liu was found dead in a basement apartment near the York University campus on April 15. The man’s lawyer said he plans to plead not guilty.

Authorities still haven’t determined a cause of death and toxicology tests aren’t expected for another week.

The foreign student had been talking with her boyfriend in China via webcam when a man entered the room and a struggle ensued. The victim’s boyfriend witnessed part of the struggle before Liu’s computer was turned off.

The visitation and funeral service for Liu will be held Wednesday morning in Thornhill.

York University is establishing a scholarship in Liu’s name.

The $5,000 scholarship will go to a student York University English Language Institute.

Later this week a tree planting ceremony will be held on campus.

And a condolence book is available at Vari Hall until 4 p.m.
