Help for those who suffer from seasonal allergies

The start of spring is welcome news for most, but if you suffer from seasonal allergies, the season means sneezes, not sunshine.

Watery eyes and itchy noses are on the way, thanks to the increased amount of pollen and other allergens in the air – and it’s happening earlier and earlier every year.

“There is climate change and of course, as the temperatures warm, the seasons do tend to start a little bit earlier,” Dr. Karen Binkley, allergist and clinical immunologist, told CityNews.

“People will start with the over-the-counter products but if these are ineffective and the symptoms are more severe, we move up to the prescription medications and it depends on patient preference. And then we consider allergy shots as well,” Dr. Binkley said.

Tips to minimize your allergies

  • Stay inside in the morning
  • Keep doors and windows closed
  • Don’t dry your laundry outdoors
  • Wear sunglasses outside
  • Wash bedding and stuffed toys frequently in hot water
  • Maintaining low humidity
  • Regularly use a vacuum with a fine filter such as a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter
  • Replace carpeting with hard flooring
