Black bears spotted north of the city

Residents north of the city have reported seeing black bears wandering their neighbourhoods.

The town of Aurora posted a warning on its website late last week after the animals – now emerging from hibernation – turned up in the Case Woodlot, near Bathurst Street and Henderson Drive.

And a couple of days later, on Mother’s Day, a Sutton man took photos of a medium-sized black bear walking through his subdivision near Sibbald Point Provincial Park.

So far, the creatures have kept to themselves.

In June 2009, a few kilometres from the most recent sightings in Aurora, a young black bear ran from media cameras and took refuge in a tree.

Emergency workers tranquilized “Wellington” and released him north of Barrie.

Black bears live mostly in forested areas where it’s easy to find food, winter den sites and refuge. But with the garbage, outdoor grills and birdfeed that accompany sprawling urban developments, the animals are drawn to areas where people live.
