Despite six fatalities, OPP say long-weekend drivers were well-behaved

The OPP have confirmed another long weekend traffic fatality, bringing the total number of deaths on our roads to six.

The latest incident took place on Monday afternoon, in Sundridge Ont.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford told CityNews a female driver was killed in the crash.

“A car has collided with a passenger train and reports are right now that one person has been pronounced deceased at the scene,” he said.  “It’s still early in the investigation.”

Despite the fatalities, the OPP say there’s been a 21 per cent reduction in serious injury crashes when compared to last year’s stats.

“We’re getting that message out to people,” Woodfard stressed.

“Throughout the GTA it’s been excellent,” he added.  “We’ve had no serious crashes in the GTA, we’ve had a lot of officers out, in fact someone told me earlier today that they’ve never seen so many officers…which is good because it slows people down and it makes them aware that we are out there..keeping our roads safe.”

Police did suspend several drivers and pulled the plates off numerous vehicles.  One man was caught behind the wheel despite a lifetime driving ban.  Another, who had his licence suspended after blowing over the legal alcohol limit, called a friend to pick him up.  Upon arrival, police noticed booze on his breath as well and his licence was also suspended.
