Police sampling DNA in Varaschin murder

Police in Orangeville, Ont., are asking a select group of men for a voluntary DNA sample to help with the investigation into the death of Sonia Varaschin.

Varaschin, 42, was reported missing last Aug. 30 and her body was found in a wooded area outside Orangeville six days later.

Her death was ruled a homicide, but the cause of death hasn’t been released and no arrests have been made.

“We have your DNA. It’s only a matter of time until we find out who you are, and we will leave no stone unturned, we will find you and bring you before a court of justice,” OPP Cst. Peter Leon said.

Over the next several weeks, detectives will contacting a number of men 18 years or older who may have had contact with Varaschin at the time of her death. They will be asked for cheek swabs, which will be compared to DNA recovered during their investigation.

“By providing a DNA sample you will assist in our efforts to catch the person responsible for the senseless and brutal slaying of this young girl and bring them to justice,” Det. Insp. Andy Karski said in a statement Tuesday.

“It is completely confidential and by agreeing to provide this voluntary sample you will be doing a great service to your community and public safety.”

Police say there is no obligation to provide a sample, that the sample will be destroyed if it proves not to be a match, there will be a consent form involved and the opportunity to contact a lawyer.

They are also asking anyone who notices a man acting strangely or abruptly moving as a result of the canvas to call them at (519) 941-2522 or Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 1-800-222-8477.
