Streets around the GTA saw an increase in two-wheel traffic Monday for the annual Bike to Work Day.
Those who relied on pedal power to get into work got some free fuel in the form of al-fresco pancake breakfasts at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga and at Nathan Phillips Square.
Bike to Work Day, or Group Commute, is the marquee event of Bike Month. For a full list of events click here (.pdf).
The bike events fall in line with World Environment Day celebrations leading up to June 5 — Toronto is the North American host city for the United Nations program.
Cycling remains a contentious issue in Toronto. Mayor Rob Ford, who vowed to end the “war on cars”, has hinted he’s considering removing the bike lanes on Jarvis Street.
However, Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of the public works and infrastructure committee, has signaled he’d like to install physically separated lanes for bikes downtown. That plan will be introduced at committee in late June.
