Public hearings on G20 Review start Wednesday

Members of the public will get a rare chance to offer their input on policing at major events at hearings concerning the G20 Review that start Wednesday.

The first hearing is taking place at Metro Hall between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Those who wish to speak at the meeting had to make a submission by Tuesday night. Remaining speaker slots are being handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Submissions will be used to form a report for the body that establishes policies for the Toronto Police Service. Former Ontario associate chief justice John Morden is conducting the review.

Two more hearings will take place June 6 at the Etobicoke Civic Centre and June 13 at the Scarborough Civic Centre.

The Toronto Police Services Board launched the Independent Civilian Review into Matters Relating to the G20 Summit last September.

Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin called the more than 1,100 arrests made over the June 25-27, 2010 weekend in Toronto a mass violation of civil rights. There were 20,000 police officers patrolling the streets during the summit.
