Five things to do this weekend: comedy for kids, short film fest & blues near the Beach

CityNews.ca brings you another installment of “Five Things”, featuring a snapshot of some of the cool events happening around Toronto this weekend. Ranging from kid-friendly comedy; soul-bearing blues music; short films from around the world; an event featuring locally made goods and the chance to ride your bike on the DVP for charity — we’ve got you covered.

For families: Kids get a chance to have their ideas transformed into stories on stage at the Second City in “The Absolutely Positively Completely Made Up Show”. Master-improvisers take suggestions from the audience in this family-friendly offering recommended for kids 13 and under. There’s a performance Sat. June 4 at 11 a.m. and the show runs through to September. Individual tickets are $12 and a family pack is $40. www.secondcity.com.

For singles: Torontonians are known for being film-buffs and cinephiles have reason to rejoice this weekend as the 17th annual Worldwide Short Film Festival winds down. There are nearly 300 flicks from 36 countries, so there’s something for everyone at various downtown venues including the Bloor Cinema, the Varsity, the ROM and others. Individual screening tickets are $10 and packages are available. www.worldwideshortfilmfest.com.

For visitors: A trip to the Beach is nice any day, but it will be particularly special this weekend when the Waterfront Blues Festival takes over Woodbine Park at Lake Shore Boulevard and Coxwell Avenue. Spend Friday night, Saturday and Sunday listening to top musicians pour their hearts out. Free. www.waterfrontblues.ca.

For charity: This weekend is your chance to ride your bike or rollerblade on two major highways — legally — and raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation at the same time! The massive ride goes Sunday on the DVP and Gardiner Expressway. You can register and commit to raising $100 or more for the charity. www.rideforheart.ca.

For kicks: Shopping is fun and you can feel less guilty about spending the cash knowing you’re supporting local businesses at the appropriately named Love Local event Saturday at the Brickworks. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free. www.lovelocal.ca.
