Woman dies after head-on crash with Greyhound bus in B.C.

A head-on collision between a Greyhound bus and a car in southeast B.C. early Saturday left one person dead and two seriously injured.

The female driver of the car died instantly in the crash, which occurred on Highway 3 between the communities of Fernie and Sparwood, RCMP Cpl. Annie Linteau said.

The 34-year-old woman’s identity was being withheld until her family could be notified, but Linteau said she was from Cowley, Alta.

The bus driver and one passenger were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Linteau said.

Six passengers were on the bus, which was bound for Creston, B.C., from Calgary, said Greyhound spokeswoman Maureen Richmond, adding everyone on board was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“Three of the passengers have been treated and released and will actually be continuing along on an afternoon schedule (Saturday) to continue their journey to Creston,” Richmond told The Canadian Press.

Images showed the bus along the side of the highway.

“The collision was pretty much head-on, the bus did end up in the ditch upon impact,” Linteau said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, though Linteau noted it happened at 4 a.m. so it was still dark.

The stretch of highway through the mountains between Fernie and Sparwood is largely two-laned.

Greyhound was sending its own investigators to the scene as police also investigated, Richmond said.

“Any time there is an accident, minor or more severe, we would send our safety officer to the scene to conduct a full internal investigation.”
