Jobs returns as Apple unveils iCloud

Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned to the spotlight Monday to unveil the iCloud, Apple’s new music-streaming service.

Jobs appeared slim, wearing his signature jeans and black mock turtleneck as he received a standing ovation from the more than 5,000 Apple supporters at the company’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference.

In January, Jobs went on his third medical leave for an undisclosed condition. He has previously battled pancreatic cancer.

Jobs emerged from leave to announce Apple’s newest venture, the iCloud. The Internet-based service will synchronise key data across numerous devices. In addition, anyone who buys a book, music or an app will see it shared across up to 10 devices.

Apple also unveiled an operating systems update for Mac users called Lion. It expands the way finger-touches can be used to control software. It will be available to consumers in July for $30.

Jobs was only on stage for a few minutes and left the specifics of the day’s announcement to top executives.

Apple’s stock was up Monday morning, but fell 1.3 per cent to $339 shortly after Jobs left the stage.

In addition, Apple also unveiled updates to its software for iPhones and iPads. Apple said it has sold more than 25 million iPads since they went on sale 14 months ago.
