Officer shot in Lindsay hit once by friendly fire: SIU

At least one of the two shots a police officer sustained during a police raid on Wednesday was from another officer, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says.

“As a result of the SIU investigation to date it has been determined that at least one of the officer’s injuries was caused by a police firearm,” the agency said in a news release. The SIU is investigating the shooting.

Const. Keith Calderwood, a member of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police emergency response team, was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital on Wednesday after he was shot twice during a police raid of a home on Georgian Street in Lindsay, about 130 kilometres northeast of Toronto. Officers were executing a drug search warrant when the gunfire erupted.

Earlier on Friday, officials said Calderwood was expected to be released from hospital within days.

“All the news that I’m hearing about our officer is encouraging,” Peterborough police Deputy Chief Steve Streeter said.

“It’s our hope that he’ll be released from the hospital here in Toronto within a couple of days.”

A 21-year-old man, Corey Armstrong of Toronto, was killed in the incident.

Kawartha Lakes police said Thursday that four of five people arrested were released “pending further investigation.”

The only person currently charged, a 39-year-old Bowmanville woman, was slated to appear in court Friday.

Jennifer Nicholson is charged with breach of recognizance.
