Man allegedly targeting teen girls at youth shelters charged

Police have charged a 53-year-old man for an alleged sexual assault on a teenager from a youth shelter and investigators believe there may be other victims.

The suspect allegedly hung around near a youth shelter last Friday and offered a 17-year-old girl there a job. Police claim he gave her drugs and alcohol at his place of business and then sexually assaulted her.

Authorities claim the accused, who went by the name Abby, targets girls in youth shelters, specifically those looking for a job. He’s described as having a brown complexion, five feet, seven inches, 150 pounds with short black thinning hair and a long face.

Det. Amanda Thornton told CityNews.ca the suspect hangs around outside, in the area around the shelter, and befriends girls, offering work in the restaurant industry.

Ramalingam Abayaharan has been charged with sexual exploitation and sexual assault. He’s due in court July 26.
