Street artists take aim at Ford

Street artists have found a creative way to fight back against Mayor Rob Ford’s war on graffiti — by making him the subject of their work.

The mayor’s image has been popping up on walls across Toronto, including on a city-endorsed mural near Earlscourt Ave. and St. Clair Ave. W. — the same location that Ford power-washed back in April.

It was a symbolic start to Ford’s graffiti crackdown.

“It (graffiti) just depreciates the value of everyone’s property, it turns it into a ghetto and that’s not the type of city I want to represent,” he said at the time.

Councillor Cesar Palacio commissioned the mural that was recently targeted with a picture of the mayor’s smiling face.

“That’s something in my opinion, of poor taste, that they are targeting the mayor, who is trying to do his best,” Palacio told CityNews.

In the meantime, the city is preparing to issue a new bylaw to a city committee on Wednesday for discussion, with clear definitions between tagging and graffiti.
