Troops mark last Canada Day in Kandahar with jokes, music and memories

Festivities marking Canada Day for the troops are underway in Kandahar.

A number of events are planned with special guests, including Quebec comedians Andre-Phillipe Gagnon, Rick Mercer and Mike Smith — Bubbles from the Trailer Park boys.

Leafs general manager Brian Burke and defenceman Luke Schenn were also glad-handing.

Soldiers are streaming into Kandahar Airfield as part of the Canadian combat withdrawal.

Cpl. Kevin Bernier-Drolet, of the reconnaissance platoon, arrived back at the base last night after spending almost seven months in the fields of Panjwaii.

He and Cpl. Olivier Guenette made Tim Horton’s one of their first stops, where all troops, including Americans were given red and white maple leaf ball caps.
