Man identified after shooting in Whitby; SIU investigating

Investigators have identified the man killed after shots were fired inside a home in Whitby Monday.

The Durham Regional Police Emergency Task Force was called to a house on Clune Place, near Taunton Road East and Garden Street, around 5 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived they found an injured toddler and a dead man.

“They found a 13-month-old female infant, who had apparently sustained at least one gunshot wound. The infant was transported to Sick Kids Hospital by air last night and is now in stable condition. The officers also found 22-year-old Andre Hogg, deceased, in the residence,” said Jasbir Brar, spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit.

Durham police say officers didn’t exchange gunfire with anyone at the scene.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the incident. The agency has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

Neighbour Lauren Spratt told CityNews.ca she heard screaming coming from outside the home, and went to a second-floor window to see what the commotion was about.

She said she saw a very distraught woman in the front of that house, and recognized her as the child’s mother.

It was a “little nerve-racking seeing a bunch of police officers with guns and stuff,” Spratt said.

Some neighbours said police had visited the home several times before the incident on Monday.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the SIU at (416) 622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 1935.
