Man wanted for fatal stabbing at Canada Day picnic surrenders

A man wanted for a fatal stabbing on Canada Day has turned himself in to police.

Shawn Charles was killed at a picnic on Biggin Court, near Victoria Park and Eglinton avenues, on July 1. Police say the 39-year-old was stabbed while trying to break up a fight during a pick-up basketball game.

He was dropped off at a hospital around 6:30 p.m. where he succumbed to his injury. His death marks the city’s 25th homicide of the year.

About 50 people were at the picnic when Charles was stabbed, authorities said.

On Sunday, police issued a second-degree murder warrant for 27-year-old Anthony Campbell. Police said he turned himself in at 32 Division on Monday, but they haven’t yet confirmed the charge.

Campbell was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
