5 things to do this weekend: kids theatre, St. Clair West fest & outdoor art show

The Honda Indy is the big event in town this weekend but there are still plenty of options for those who aren’t excited by the roars of the engines. In this week’s installment of our “Five Things”  series — looking at events happening in Toronto for a variety of ages and interests — we recommend theatre for kids, some soccer for a good cause and more.

July 9-10, 2011

For families: The Toronto Fringe Festival is offering up seven shows for youngsters as part of its Kids Fringe program. All shows, including a retelling of Romeo and Juliet with puppets and a play about a wayward shadow, run at the Palmerston Library Theatre at 560 Palmerston Ave. Fri. July 8 – Sun. July 17. Kids 12 and under $5. Various times. www.fringetoronto.com.

For visitors: The city’s largest Latino-themed street festival kicks off Saturday on St.Clair Avenue West. The busy stretch will be shut down between Winona Drive and Christie Street and there’ll be loads of great food, fun events and amazing music. Saturday from noon to 11 p.m.; Sunday from noon and 9 p.m. Free. Click here for more.

For singles: Check out what local artists have to offer at Nathan Phillips Square during the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. The event celebrates its 50th birthday this year, Friday through Sunday, starting at 10:30 a.m. Free (but the art, of course, is not). www.torontooutdoorart.org.

For charity: Support Canada’s men’s and women’s teams heading to the Homeless World Cup of Soccer being held in Paris next month. This weekend, there is a tournament at Polson Pier (176 Cherry St.) to choose players representing Canada.  Saturday. 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Admission is free but organizers are kindly asking for donations to send the teams overseas. Click here for more details.

For kicks: Is there a restaurant you walk by every day and are eager to check out? Well, now’s your chance. Summerlicious includes 150 eateries offering special prix fixe menus. All weekend long. Prices and locations vary. www.toronto.ca/summerlicious
