Liberals blast Hudak’s plan to have prisoners clean streets

The Liberals blasted Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak’s promise to put convicts to work cleaning the streets, claiming the plan would put families at risk.

“Tim Hudak is trying to fool people into thinking there aren’t dangerous criminals in provincial jails,” Liberal MPP Jim Bradley said in a statement Monday. “He couldn’t be more wrong. His plan puts violent offenders, drug dealers and people convicted of other serious crimes into parks, playgrounds and neighbourhoods.”

In May, Hudak said if he wins the provincial election this fall he’d force inmates at Ontario prisons to perform 40 hours of manual labour, including cleaning graffiti, picking up trash, raking leaves and cutting grass.

The Liberals released a list of current inmates that would be included in Hudak’s plan and the offences they were convicted for. It includes 16 prisoners convicted for homicide-related crimes, 101 for serious violent crimes and 79 sex offenders.

Hudak said Monday that if elected premier, he’d pass legislation forcing registered sex offenders to wear GPS tracking devices.

“If a convicted sex offender or child predator steps foot on a playground or near a school, I want the police to know,” the PC leader said.

Ontarians head to the polls on Oct. 6.
