N.S. woman who donated most of her lotto fortune dies

A Nova Scotia woman who made headlines around the world for giving away most of a multimillion-dollar lottery win has died.

An obituary published online by a funeral home says Violet Large died Saturday at a hospital in Truro at the age of 79.

Large and her husband Allen won a whopping $11.2 million in a Lotto 649 jackpot last year.

But rather than spend their winnings, the Lower Truro couple quietly gave away most of the fortune to family, friends, churches, charities, fire halls and hospitals where Large was treated for ovarian cancer.

The Larges were named individual philanthropists of the year last month by the Maritime Philanthropy Awards.

A funeral for Violet Large was scheduled for Tuesday in Truro.
