Police warn of heat wave phone scam

A fraudster appears to be taking advantage of the hot weather and increased demand for air conditioning this week.

Authorities in Durham Region have issued a warning about a telephone scam in which a suspect tries to sell people a device to save money on electricity.

The caller claims to be selling a device for $150 that can result in 60 per cent savings on home electricity bills, police said. Hydro officials have confirmed they’re not involved in the sale of this product.

The suspect has been described as aggressive and convincing, police said.

Authorities are reminding people to be wary about divulging personal information over the phone.

If you have any information on this case, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
