3 charged in Aurora robbery

Three men including a teen have been charged in connection to an alleged robbery in Aurora that sent a police officer and one of the suspects to hospital with gunshot wounds.

York Regional police were called around 8:30 p.m. on July 22, after reports of a robbery in progress at a Bell Store at 91 First Commerce Dr.

Police say they confronted three suspects in the plaza parking lot and a struggle ensued.

A police officer was shot in the wrist and one of the suspects may have been shot in the head. The suspect remains at Sunnybrook hospital. It hasn’t been disclosed how the officer was injured.

Ryan Michael Patrick Berment, 18, Michael Kevin Whitlock, 24, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were all charged in relation to the robbery.

Berment alone is charged with assaulting a peace officer.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is also probing the incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault
