N.Y. firefighters donate World Trade Center steel to N.L. memorial

A fire department in New York is donating a piece of the World Trade Center to Gander, N.L., for its help after the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The town in northeastern Newfoundland was the closest airport for 38 passenger planes forced to land on Sept. 11, 2001.

Gander and nearby towns were celebrated for welcoming more than 6,000 stranded passengers as if they were family.

The Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department on Long Island is donating a piece of steel beam for the 10th anniversary of 9-11.

The remnant from the World Trade Center will be part of a memorial at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander.

Mayor Claude Elliott says Gander will cherish the piece of steel as a tribute to those who died, and to volunteers who helped the living.
