King & queen competition at Lamport Stadium Thurs. night

Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival celebrations kick into high gear Thursday with the annual king and queen competition at Lamport Stadium.

Members of Mas camps have been burning the midnight oil, working to put the finishing touches on costumes and displays.

The king and queen competition starts at 7 p.m. at the stadium on King Street West, near Dufferin. Competitors will be showing off costumes that weigh two to three times their weight.

The celebration Thursday follows a showcase of Soca stars at the Harbourfront Centre Wednesday night.

On Friday, the Pan Alive steel pan competition and showcase takes over Lamport Stadium with musicians of all ages set to show off their stuff.

And the marquee event — the annual parade — takes over Lake Shore Boulevard Saturday.
