Extended closure likely after more glass falls from Grosvenor St. condo

A recurring problem with falling glass at a condominium means the affected section of Grosvenor Street will likely be closed this week.

Once again, a glass balcony pane from 37 Grosvenor St. fell and crashed on the ground Monday. Luckily, no one was walking by when it happened.

Grosvenor is expected to be closed between Yonge and Bay streets for the week.

This is the seventh such incident at this address is the past several weeks. The last time, panes fell from two balconies on July 21, forcing police to close down the street.

No one has been injured in any of these incidents.

The condo developer, Lanterra Developments, said it reinforced all of the balconies about six or seven months ago, but the problem resurfaced.

“Over the last four to six weeks we’ve had something like seven or eight more breaks,” Lanterra President and CEO Barry Fenton said.

The balcony railings were purchased from a Quebec company that has since gone bankrupt. The job of replacing the balconies is expected to wrap up in October.

Residents have been advised to stay off their balconies and out of the swimming pool below due to the potential off falling glass.
