U.S. President Obama turns 50

U.S. President Barack Obama is celebrating a milestone birthday just days after reaching a landmark debt deal.

Obama turns 50 Thursday and he’s scheduled to celebrate the big day at the White House where senior members of his staff plan to hold a shindig for the commander-in-chief in the Blue Room.

On Thursday night, Obama and his family will travel to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. Some friends and relatives will be travelling from Chicago to celebrate with the president.

A White House official said the Obamas will be paying for the birthday celebration in Washington.

Jennnifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go gave Obama a birthday serenade at a fundraising event in Chicago Wednesday night.

Obama said his oldest daughter Malia was coming home from camp Thursday to celebrate her father’s big day.

The debt ceiling battle with the Republicans ended Tuesday when Obama signed an emergency bill into law. The measure prevented the country’s first-ever default.
