5 things to do this weekend: Mardi Gras, Cirque du Soleil, Bloor Street fair

As our regular CityNews.ca series continues, we look at events happening in Toronto for a variety of ages and interests.

For families: The midway will be buzzing and the music will be swinging at the eighth annual New Orleans-inspired Lakeshore Mardi Gras. There are rides for kids, buskers, tons of food and amazing tunes. Starts at noon Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. www.lakeshoremardigras.ca.

For visitors: TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil is running in the Port Lands. It was created by acclaimed Canadian director Robert Lepage. Saturday, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday. 1 p.m and 5 p.m. Tickets start at $42 for kids and $60 for adults. www.cirquedusoleil.com/totem.

For singles: You may be able to find a bargain or two at the sidewalk sale during the first annual Bloorcourt Arts & Crafts Street Fair. There will be entertainment, food and shopping. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free. www.bloorcourt.com.

For charity: Lace up your running shoes and raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society in the Acura 10-miler on Sunday. There are still spots available. The run starts in the Distillery District, winds down to the Leslie Spit, and ends where it began. Race starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. www.canadarunningseries.com.

For kicks: Sample the best of Pan-Asian cuisine at the Fortune Cooking Food Festival at Harbourfront Centre. There willl be an Iron Chef competition other amazing culinary demonstrations. Saturday & Sunday noon to 8 p.m. Admission is free. www.harbourfrontcentre.com.
