Canadians with Wong surnames get their own coat of arms

The Wongs of Canada are about to get their own coat of arms, thanks to the Wong Kung Har Wun Sun Association, also known as the Wong Association of Ontario.

The unveiling of the official Wong crest is part of a weekend of festivities, beginning Friday in Toronto.

“I think being part of the association is one thing that makes me proud,” said member Caroline Wong. “It’s something that’s been an important part of our family history. All of us have been members.”

About 1,100 Wongs from across the globe will gather Friday evening for a meet-and-greet at the downtown Bond Place Hotel.

On Saturday afternoon, all of them will gather at Queen’s Park for a “family” photo.

Premier Dalton McGuinty will be present for the gala presentation of the coat of arms Saturday night at the Toronto International Centre on Airport Road.

The crest was granted by the Canadian Heraldic Authority, which is part of the office of the Governor General.

“I guess the saying is everybody knows a Wong. There are so many of us …We’re achieving so much in Canada, and it wasn’t too long ago that our parents came over and had to make a life for themselves and us growing up,” said delegate Brenda Wong. “So it makes you proud so many have achieved such great success,”

The first documentation of a Wong arriving in Canada was back in 1958. Currently, there are about 60 million Wongs in the world.
