Driver, baby escape with minor scrapes after tree hits car

A huge branch the size of a small tree fell on a vehicle Thursday afternoon in the city’s north end, slightly injuring both the driver and a baby.

The nine-month-old had several scrapes but was otherwise unhurt. The female driver, meanwhile, had cuts on her hand from the broken windshield.

“I’m scared. I’m so scared,” driver Soyoung Park said. The 23-year-old was driving while her friend, the child’s mother, sat in the back with the car seat.

“The baby also got some glass…but I think he’s fine. That’s a good thing. The best thing,” Park said.

It appears wind knocked down the branch near Finch Avenue and Kenneth Avenue around 1:30 p.m.  The branch fell across three lanes of traffic.

Finch was closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon so crews could clear the road. The Manitoba maple is a city-owned tree, and it will eventually be cut down entirely.
