First Air says cause of jet crash unknown, 2 of 3 survivors sent to Ottawa

First Air says it doesn’t know what caused one of its passenger jets to crash near the High Arctic community of Resolute, killing 12 and injuring three.

Spokesman Christopher Ferris says the airline is fully co-operating with the Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation.

He says field teams, including counsellors, have been deployed to provide support in Resolute, Yellowknife and other main stations in the airline’s network.

Twelve people died when a First Air Boeing 737-200 crashed into a small hill while trying to land on a runway at Resolute Bay, Nunavut, on Saturday. The jet was on a charter flight from Yellowknife and was landing at the time of the crash.

The RCMP says two of the three survivors have been sent to an Ottawa hospital.

Cst. Angelique Dignard says two of the survivors — a seven-year-old girl and a 48-year-old man — were transported by emergency aircraft to Ottawa General Hospital.

The third survivor, a 23-year-old woman, remains in a hospital in the territorial capital of Iqaluit. Dignard says all three are in stable condition, but would not comment on the nature of their injuries.
