Contract talks set to resume to avert strike at Ontario colleges

Contract talks will resume Tuesday in order to prevent a strike at Ontario’s 24 colleges and avoid postponing the school year.

More than 8,000 support staff will be in a legal strike position as of Sept. 1.

“Students should be very aware that the start of the school year will be jeopardized as long as college management refuses to negotiate seriously,” said Rod Bemister, chair of the bargaining team for OPSEU in a statement.

The union is against the college’s plans for a two-tiered employment system, and what they say will be the erosion of full-time jobs.

The school year for provincial colleges is set to resume Sept. 6.
