The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) says pets should be relegated to the cargo hold in order to protect passengers’ health.
The group representing the nation’s doctors has called for a ban on animals inside airline cabins because they pose a risk to passengers who suffer from severe allergies.
While some CMA members believe airlines should ultimately make the call on whether to allow pets, the group’s president, Dr. Jeff Turnbull, said the CMA has a responsibility to speak out about the issue.
Air Canada banned pets in their aircraft cabins in September 2006 but reversed that decision three years later due to the outcry from pet owners.
Small dogs, cats, birds and rabbit are allowed to travel on Westjet aircraft.
