Nick Carter: ‘My Canadian fans are sweethearts’

We got the chance to ask Nick Carter a few questions about his solo album I’m Taking Off, working with Canadian Shawn Desman, and how it feels to finally be out on his own.

iVillage: What’s been the best thing about doing a solo album vs. working with a large group?
Nick Carter: In a band you have to play as a team and sometimes sacrifice your own wants and needs for the better of the group. This can be fun though since you do not have to bear the entire responsibility if something goes bad like a wrong single choice or bad wardrobe [laughing].

Being solo is just the opposite. I have to make all the choices and I have no one to blame but myself. It’s fun though because you can bring those good and bad experiences back to the group and share them. Basically one can help the other.

iV: What was it like working with Canadian Shawn Desman on this record?
NC: Shawn Desman has become such a great friend of mine. Whenever we get together it’s like old souls just reuniting. He’s super talented and I can’t wait to get back to Canada and hang with him and write some more.

iV: Was the release in Canada plus the exclusive track (only available in Canada) a way of saying thanks to your loyal fans north of the border? Do you find they’re some of your most loyal?
NC: Canadian fans are not just loyal but they are sweethearts as well. I totally felt that they deserved something different than the rest of the world so giving them a song from a local fan favourite was the least that I could do. I can’t wait to give them more surprises.

iV: Who’s one artist you’d love to collaborate with that you haven’t worked with yet?
NC: There are so many great artists out there today. I just feel that it’s important to not over saturate. That’s why I like doing a song with [Briton] Briddy Shaw called Burning Up on my record – people that are extra talented but at the same time are on the up. It’s special.

iV: What’s one thing people would be surprised to find that you’re passionate about?
NC: I’m very passionate about health and Intelligence. I love to feel like I’m learning and growing. I want to be better than I am always. One of my mottos is never believe that I know everything. That thought process got me in trouble in the past.
