Canadian shot dead while storming Gadhafi compound in Libya: friend

A Canadian-born man was killed in Libya this week as he fought to free his ancestral home from the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.

A friend says Nader Benrewin was shot by a sniper as he stormed Gadhafi’s compound on Tuesday. He was 24.

Haitham Alabadleh says Benrewin was born in Edmonton but had family living in Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

He says Benrewin had lived and worked in Ottawa for three years before deciding to return to Libya to offer support to rebel forces.

Alabadleh remembers his friend as a peace activist who loved to attend seminars and enjoyed meals and riverside strolls with his friends.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of reports that a Canadian was killed in Libya but declined to offer any confirmation.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had an erroneous spelling for the dead man’s last name.
