Man will swim across Lake Ontario for charity

A lawyer says he will try to swim across Lake Ontario to help raise money for a new London, Ont., mental health facility.

Greg Willoughby, 41, will begin the 51 kilometre swim at 7 p.m. Friday from Niagara Falls to Marlyn Bell Park in Toronto. He hopes to raise $25,000 for the St. Joseph’s Health Care centre in London.

The immigration and refugee lawyer said on his website that he has been training six days a week – both on his own and with the London Silver Dolphins – and hopes to complete the swim in 18 hours.

Only one in four people who start the swim actually finish it, according to his website.

If he succeeds, Willoughby would be the 55th person to successfully swim across the lake since Marilyn Bell first did it in 1954.
