Ontario’s community colleges are offering all unionized support staff annual salary hikes and no benefit cuts, hoping to avoid a September strike.
The offer would pay union members 1.5 per cent more for the first two years and 1.75 per cent in the third year of the proposed contract, which doesn’t ask for concessions.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents nearly 8,000 support staff, is seeking a three per cent wage increase yearly, as well as job protection against part-time and temporary hires.
Contract talks began June 3 between the union and the College Employer Council, which represents the province’s 24 colleges.
The school year for provincial colleges is set to resume Sept. 6.
