Two people are dead after an incident at a construction company in Schomberg on Tuesday morning, York Regional police confirm.

They are now investigating a double-murder at James Elliott Underground Construction on Lloydtown Aurora Road, west of Newmarket.

A female employee called 911 after finding Bill Jones, 74, and Jim Wilson, who was also in his 70s, with serious head injuries around 10:25 a.m. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene and the other died in hospital.  Both men worked as mechanics.

The owner of the business, Jim Elliott, said Jones had been a longtime employee.

“Bill’s been with me for forty years, he’s a very close friend,” he said.

Police are investigating. It’s not yet known how the victims died.

A male employee was in custody for questioning, Insp. Gary Miner said.  “He’s definitely a person of interest,” he told CityNews.

The incident rattled area residents.

“Right now I’m stunned, I can’t believe this has happened,” said Clarence Boyd, who knew both men.

Another woman on scene reacted with shock.

“It’s very upsetting, those two old guys were sweethearts, they are (in their 70s) and they come to work every day.

“I guess people snap sometimes and maybe that’s what happened.”
