Toddler escape forces Markham daycare to close: report

A Markham daycare has been closed after three toddlers wandered away from the facility in mid-August.

The Ministry of Children and Youth Services suspended Markham Village Childcare Centre’s license “because it was concerned for the safety and well-being of the children in its care,” the Ministry of Education confirmed to CityNews in an email.

“The centre will remain closed until it comes into compliance with the Notice of Direction that has been issued,” spokesperson Kevin Dove said.

The three children, all wearing diapers, left the daycare on Highway 7 near Ninth Line on Aug. 16,  the Toronto Star reports. They walked through a parking lot and into a drug store, where an employee found them. The employee notified the daycare and police.

It appears that the daycare staff may not have noticed the children were missing until they were notified by the drug store manager.
