Sidney Crosby will provide update on his recovery

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is expected to provide an update Wednesday on the progress of his recovery from a concussion.

Crosby will speak to reporters at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, the NHL team said Tuesday.

Many hockey insiders are feeling encouraged the superstar from Cole Harbour, N.S., may be on the comeback trail.

Frank Buonomo, the Penguins’ senior director of team operations confirmed to CityNews on July 15 that Crosby has resumed skating as part of his off-season training schedule.

He hasn’t played since Jan. 5, after taking hits in two consecutive games.

“I appreciate all the support I’ve received from my family, friends, teammates and fans and from the entire Penguins organization,” Crosby said in a statement released last month. “I know they only want the best for my health, and for me to be fully ready when I return to game action.”

The 2007 NHL MVP has seen concussion specialists around the United States this summer. They have been monitoring his progress as he tries to shake headaches and other concussion symptoms.

However, when Crosby got to 90 per cent exertion in his workouts, the headaches returned. At that point, his doctors and trainers altered his workouts accordingly.

Training camp opens Sept. 16 and Pittsburgh plays its first regular-season game Oct. 6.

Agent Pat Brisson has said Crosby’s return won’t be dictated by dates or games.
