Toronto police head south to mark 9-11 anniversary

GTA police officers have started their trip to New York City to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Early Thursday morning, 160 officers from Toronto, Peel, York, Durham, Thunder Bay and the RCMP boarded buses at 12 division headquarters in Etobicoke.

Supt. Sam Fernandez says they will take part in the memorial parade and carry the Canadian flag.

“It’s a very trying time for a lot of police officers, especially those who have been there in the first few years,” he said.

“When we went there it was nothing but a hole in the ground. We saw the development of the area over the last nine years.”

The commemoration ceremony takes place Sunday.
