TTC hires new COO from Australia’s RailCorp

An executive in Australia has been hired by the Toronto Transit Commission to be its first chief operating officer.

Andy Byford, COO of passenger rail services operator RailCorp in Sydney will join the TTC in November, the commission said Thursday in a release.

Byford is still in Australia and wasn’t immediately available for an interview. But TTC spokesman Brad Ross said that the COO position is new and replaces the general manager of operations role which was vacated by Rick Cornacchia in March.

The title change is in keeping with organizational structures in large urban transit systems around the world, the TTC said in the release.

The new COO will report to chief general manager Gary Webster, and will act as the deputy chief general manager in Webster’s absence, Ross said.

Byford’s appointment follows an international search, and the focus of his position will be on customer service delivery, he said.

Before joining RailCorp in 2009, Byford held several positions in the United Kingdom, including safety director at South Eastern Trains and general manager at London Underground.
