Apple’s new CEO expected to reveal new iPhone Oct. 4

Techies rejoice: Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone at a media event next month, according to technology news website AllThingsD.com.

The publication, citing sources close to Apple, says new CEO Tim Cook will showcase the iPhone 5 on Oct. 4 – his first big product introduction since taking the helm from Steve Jobs in late August.

The new device should be available to U.S. consumers within weeks of the announcement.

There were no details about where the event will be held or when the iPhone 5 will launch in Canada.

Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, stepped down on Aug. 24 after taking leave in January for an undisclosed condition.

His resignation ended a 14-year reign at the tech giant he co-founded.

AllthingsD is owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal.
