Missing autistic teen found safe

An autistic teenage boy, missing since Tuesday afternoon, has been found safe, police say.

Stephen Liu, 14, was last seen around 3 p.m. at Zion Heights Junior High School at 5900 Leslie St., just south of Cummer Avenue, in North York.

He was found shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brimley Road and Sheppard Avenue.

“He was found in the Brimley and Sheppard area, by officers who saw a boy on a bicycle matching Stephen’s description,” said P.C. Wendy Drummond.

The officer that spotted Liu said the boy didn’t appear afraid.

“I always see him here in the morning very happy, but all of a sudden this pops up and I’m shocked,” said school friend Charles Cotton.

Officers had been searching for the teen in the Leslie and Finch area since the boy’s mother called them around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

They expanded their search, making it city-wide, around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Around 3 p.m., a command post set up on a side street in the area was moved to an arena near Bayview and Finch avenues to accommodate the logistics of a level-three search, the highest possible.

Liu was said to be found in good health. But it’s still unclear what exactly happened during the time the teen was missing.
